Samsung unseated Nokia as the number mobile phone producer

South Korean electronics giant Samsung has overtaken Nokia as the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer according to Strategy Analytics.

SamsungSamsung sold 93million units in the first quarter of 2012 and Nokia sold almost 83million . According to HIS iSuppli, Samsung sold 25.4% of mobile phones in the first quarter of 2012 including smartphons and feature phones). Nokia on the other hand sold 22.5%.

What is next for Samsung?

Samsung is the biggest phone manufacturer mainly because they almost manufacture every part from display to memory. They don’t have supply limit compared to their competitors which rely only to their supplier.

In May 3, they will unveil their 2012 flagship the “Galaxy S3” – the name was also revealed accidentally by Samsung Senior VP during the Samsung Q1 2012 Earning Call.  They are also rumored to be the manufacturer of the official Android Jelly Bean (Android 5.0) handset.

How about Competition?
Global Mobile Handset Shipments
Samsung will still face tough competitors especially in the Android arena. OEM such as HTC, Motorola and Sony are among the biggest seller of Android powered devices.  Apple is still hanging on to the single-company smartphone lead selling 35 million iPhones in the Q1 of 2012.  Nokia is still hanging on the balance with their adaptation of Windows Mobile operating system. European customer still prefer Android over Windows and this hurts carrier sales of Nokia smartphones they even stated that Nokia should go Android.
